Intro to Photography - Space

We got given the word “Space” as our photography brief and were encouraged to go and interpret it any way we chose to.

I struggled with this at first, finding it a very broad brief to follow. It was only after i took a trip to the Tate Britain and saw some work by John Stezaker called “Negotiable spaces” and “Incisions for a private space” that my idea sparked. I also remembered back to some work by a woman called Caroline Ulitsky where she had taken photos of flocks of birds in the sky and mapped geometric shapes between them. I decided to go for a walk round my local area Surbiton and look for imposed geometric spaces in everyday things we are surrounded by but don’t usually take the time to notice and then highlight them in photoshop.

I made them black and white, gave the geometric spaces some colour and overlaid some grids to add to the geometric feel of the photos.

I was really pleased with the outcome and It went down really well in the crit. I ended up getting E for Excellent, here is a picture of my write up.
